If your vehicle warns you when you drift a lane, brakes on its own, or holds a set distance on cruise, those features are reading the road through a small camera bonded to the back of your windshield, just behind the rearview mirror.
Replace the glass and that camera comes off and goes back on. Even reseated carefully, a fraction of a degree of difference at the mirror becomes a large aiming error several hundred feet out — which is exactly where the system is looking when it decides whether to brake for you. Two ways this goes wrong at other shops. The first is the surprise line item: you're quoted for glass, then billed for calibration at the end. The second is worse — the shop skips it, says nothing, and you drive away with a safety system that thinks the road is somewhere it isn't. You won't notice until the day it matters.

The window between "repairable chip" and "you need a windshield" is measured in days in this climate, and most of what closes that window is avoidable. Four steps:
One thing to skip: DIY resin kits. They can work on a clean, fresh, simple break. When they don't, the cured resin is now inside the break and a professional repair may no longer be possible — which turns a free insurance repair into a deductible plus a calibration.

An adhesive rated around one hour at 70°F can need eight hours or more at 35°F. Most adhesives aren't rated for use below 40°F at all.
